Nanji Island, one of the National Nature Reserves, China's most beautiful island, National 4A-level scenic area, is also written as Nanji shan(mountain) in ancient times. It is located on the East China Sea, 30 nautical miles away from the mouth of Aojiang River in Pingyang County, Zhejiang Province, and is 50 nautical miles away from the urban area. Nanji Island is a tourist island and the largest of the 52 islands in Nanji Islands.

Nanji Islands is not only a marine nature reserve of the UNESCO World Biosphere Conservation Area Network and a national marine nature reserve, but also a group scenic spot in Zhejiang Province. Far away from the mainland, the sea is clear and the sediment concentration is low. The sediments of the sea are dominated by silty clay. The topography of the seabed dips from west to southeast. The depth is generally between 15-25 meters, and the northeast side and southwest side of the island are deepwater channels. The channels have a water depth of 30 meters at least and a maximum depth of 45 meters. The area is dominated by marine erosion landforms, with twisting coastlines, clusters of horns, numerous bays, dense reefs, and diverse beaches. It is an area where the Zhejiang-Fujian coastal current and the Taiwan warm currents meet and alternate. The climate is mild, with an average annual temperature of 16.5°C, which means that there is no hot summer and no cold winter, either.

The Nanji Islands are eroded and impacted by waves and tides. The bedrock is bare and mostly are cliffs. The coastlines of the islands are twisted, with numerous horns and bays. The landform is dominated by marine erosion landforms, and the marine accumulation geomorphology is not well developed.

Nanji Island is known as the shellfish kingdom and the blue ranch, where is rich in natural resources. Various types of seafood can not enumerated. The main fish species concludes the common and economic fish, such as all size of yellow croaker, spotted maigre, hair tails, silver pomfret and so on, the rare and valuable fish, such as sturgeon, reeves shad, bahaba tappingensis and so on. There are 307 kinds of crabs and shrimps, and 403 kinds of shellfish in total.

In 1999, Nanji Islands was classified as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO because of the diversity of marine life. (Promotion)
