仙山湖风景旅游区位于长兴县最西端的江、浙、皖高速，杭长高速，宣杭铁路都在此处集结。仙山湖风景旅游区距安吉县城30公里，距杭州85公里，距上海170公里，距南京200公里，南接本省“竹乡”安吉，西接安徽广德县，北与江苏隔山相望。可见其区域位置十分优越，交通条件相当便利。

　　景区主要由仙山和仙湖两个自然的山水组成。仙山，主愿主孝的地藏王菩萨的祖庭，在佛教界中有着独特的重要地位，民间传有“先有仙山,后有九华”的说法，仙山也就有了“小九华山”的美誉。仙湖，是浙北最大的湿地，这里鹤鹭成群，各种珍稀水鸟，或徜徉湖面，或伫立水中，珍贵的天鹅也在这里安了家；水中杨林，更是难得一见的奇观，被誉为“东方的亚马逊”，泛舟其中，世外桃源般的景色令人浑然忘却世间的纷杂。

　　仙山高162米，山型犹如日本的富士山，方圆十里，山虽不高却能俯仰三省，山虽不广却满山苍翠，充满灵气，有关仙山的故事古老而神秘。尤其是关于唐初新罗国宫廷政变后，新罗国王子在此出家，成为地藏王菩萨地故事更使得仙山增加了无穷的魅力，历史上就有了“先有小仙山，后有大九华”的说法，也就是说九华山的地藏王菩萨是从仙山走出来的，仙山是地藏王菩萨的祖庭。

　　仙湖位于仙山一侧，水域面积约为10平方公里。湖中有一长堤贯穿东西，将整座湖分为南、北两片，堤上柳枝婆娑，亚赛西湖苏堤，碧水无染。清冽可人，水浅阔达，滩岸坦缓，仙湖下面有一条神秘的古河道和一个对应天象名称“金星”的沉没已久的古村落。由于仙山湖的自然环境非常的好，这里不但水鸟云巢，连非常珍稀的天鹅也在这里安下了家，是极为难得见到的自然生态现象。　仙山湖风景区是进入浙西北生态长廊最便捷的通道。从这里通向安吉的“中国大竹海”、“竹博园”、“藏龙百瀑”、“天荒坪水电站”、“中南百草园”，通向临安的“太湖源“、“青山湖”、“浙西大峡谷”、“大明山”、“石长城”、“”天目山“……投进了黄山的怀抱。
