皮影，又称灯影戏，是一项利用平面纸人（皮影）来创造生动人物和其他三维物体的中国传统的故事叙述艺术形式。

Shadow play, also known as shadow puppetry, is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment that uses flat articulated figures (shadow puppets) to create the impression of moving humans and other three-dimensional objects.

　　海宁皮影戏独特的“南腔”以“弋阳腔”和“海盐腔”两大声腔为主调。表演过程中的“唱词”和“道白”部分也被改为海宁方言。而因为海宁民间有祈求蚕神的风俗，海宁皮影也被誉为“蚕花戏”。

Haining shadow play formed its unique southern sound by using tunes from Yiyang and Haiyan. The libretto and spoken parts of the shadow play were also changed into the local dialect. The custom of worshipping the silkworm god became unique to Haining, giving its shadow play the name Silkworm Opera.

　　如今的海宁皮影起源于流行于南宋（1127-1279）的临安（杭州）皮影。1956年，唯一一个“蚕花戏”演出团，浙江木偶皮影艺术团在郎家班成立。这个剧团可表演70余种的戏剧。

Today’s Haining shadow play originated and developed from Lin’an (Hangzhou) shadow play in the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279). In 1956, the Zhejiang Puppet and Shadow Play Troupe was formed in Langjiaban, the only shadow play troupe performing Silkworm Opera. The troupe is able to perform 70 kinds of plays and operas.

　　2001年，浙江木偶皮影艺术团在全国演出超过210次。随着时间的推移，皮影戏的流行程度大大减弱，因此，政府正在着手吸引更多皮影艺术继承者的同时寻得财政支援。

The troupe has performed more than 210 times around the country since 2001. Over the years, the popularity of shadow play has waned and as a result the government is trying to attract more inheritors and financial support.
