CNCAO NEWS This year, in Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival, an American documentary shot in China called the Empire of dreams (also called Rent A Foreigner In China), won the highest award. A point among the documentary: “foreigners can make money by their faces” sparked some controversy.
The documentary is based on the Chengdu, telling the story of how foreigners make money in China with their faces. They call themselves "white monkeys" and describe the experiences of disguising as various occupations and playing different roles, just like monkeys in zoo watched by other people. Are there foreigners as the “white monkeys” in Hangzhou? What about their living situation? Is it true that they don’t need any educational background, and get a lot of money only by their faces?
Foreign student Tang Jingren is from Canada. He came to Hangzhou in 2015.He said that he was a white, but just made money by his mouth. In the past, the highest paid work was one-to-one English teaching, 800yuan an hour.
MacGee from Tanzania is also a foreign student, who came to Hangzhou in 2015.When talking about the "white monkey" phenomenon, MacGee laughed: “I am not a white, but I was a ‘monkey’. That is my easiest experience to make money. Jusr eating a meal with clients could earn 1500yuan.
Marie from France said that her friends would also get some jobs, but they were professional models, not just earning money by their faces. They needed certain physical conditions and had some relevant training. “I think there are few foreigners living by being “monkey”. It may be rare that someone pulls a foreigner to do some jobs casually.” Marie said.
